Sri Lanka Holds IT BPO Conference in Dubai

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai and the Northern Emirates has recently hosted a BPO-IT session regarding the participation of Sri Lankan IT BPOs in the upcoming Expand North Star and GITEX 2023.

It will take place in the Millennium Plaza Downtown on October 17th. This conference is an opportunity for different companies to woo investors from Dubai into providing resources for their companies. The Sri Lanka IT Professionals Association in Dubai and Trainocate Gulf hope that this conference can boost cooperation between the two countries and grow Sri Lanka’s burgeoning BPO sector.

They believe Dubai can help Sri Lanka achieve its goal of reaching $5 billion in IT BPO exports by 2030 while having a workforce of 200,00 IT professionals.

Among the guests who attended this event was the Sri Lankan State Minister of Investment Promotion Dilum Amunugama. He spoke about the rapid progress being made in the IT and BPO industries under President Ranil Wickremesinghe. At the same time, he also highlighted the country’s need for continued investment to establish a knowledge-based economy.

Sri Lankan Ambassador Udaya Indrarathna to the UAE provided insights into the UAE’s perspective on the information technology (IT) sector. One of the biggest providers of Sri Lankan IT BPO experts are the ex-pats in the UAR, and they hope to further establish clusters that promote this and other relevant sectors in the economy.

The occasion was possible thanks to the efforts of the Director General of the Department of Commerce, who provided financial aid for the companies to participate. They were joined by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the Sri Lankan Information Technology Professional Association (SLITPA) Dubai, and other groups to ensure the event went smoothly.

The event witnessed active participation from IT professionals hailing from both Sri Lanka and the UAE. Among the notable participants were Injazat, Seven Seas, Trainocate, Softlogic, Mindware G42 Cloud, MDS, Parallax, Orel IT, and others. Notably, two young aspiring IT professionals from Sri Lanka, aged 16, also participated in the event.

A presentation delivered by Dinesh Saparamadu, the CEO of hSenid Software, also showed the success of the IT BPO industry in Sri Lanka. He shed light on the vast potential within Sri Lanka’s IT landscape and outlined the role the UEA plays as both a customer and an investor.

Ronald Powell, serving as a representative for Injazat, provided another speech that showed all the achievements of the UAE and Sri Lankan partnership and stressed the need for global cooperation.

The event ended when Dinithi Weerasena, acting as the representative of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka, thanked all the participants for their attendance and delivered a vote of thanks for the success of this event.

The 43rd GITEX Global is the largest technology exhibition, where more than 6,000 businesses exhibit their services and technology. North Star, meanwhile, encompasses more than 1800 global startup exhibitors, 900+ investors, 250 speakers, and representatives from over 100 countries.

Sri Lanka’s involvement in GITEX and North Star offers a golden opportunity to show how much its IT sector has grown in the past few years. They will be able to do this to a global audience where they can attract a diverse group of investors and raise their standing as a technology hub, raising the prospects for local IT firms and startups.

The GITEX Global event this year has witnessed remarkable growth thanks to the AI boom happening now. More than half the exhibitors have shown some form of AI-infused technology, providing methods for how it can be used in governance, commerce, and society.

Aside from the investment opportunities, this provides Sri Lanka with knowledge about how it is used and the risks it carries with protecting digital assets and intellectual property infrastructure.

All of this has convinced the Sri Lankan IT BPO industry to participate in events like this. Because of that, they have vowed to provide a larger presence in the coming years to maximize the opportunities here.
